Chapter 12

SWIMMING AGAINST THE TIDE

The ghouls practiced their dance moves back at the amphitheater. Without legs, they felt more awkward than ever. Toralei was trying to choreograph some new steps, but they were terrible. Lagoona was trying to get up her nerve to join in, but she couldn’t.

Kelpie tried to encourage her sister. “So what kinda dance are you going to do, Lagoona?”

“I don’t know. Got any ideas, li’l fish?”

She did!

Kelpie began leaping and twirling with joyful abandon. Her enthusiasm was infectious and Lagoona managed to join her playful sister. For a moment she danced with unself-conscious grace.

“How about like this,” suggested Kelpie. “And then this, and then a whoosh!”

“I’ll do my best.” Lagoona laughed breathlessly.

Toralei held out her hand to Lagoona. “C’mon, learn from the master.”

Lagoona hesitated. Awkwardly, she took Toralei’s extended paw. “Okay.”

“Trust me,” said Toralei confidently. “Now. Fright, six, seven, eight.”

The ghouls danced. Sort of.

Clawdeen accidentally camouflaged herself and Draculaura bumped into her, squirting a jet of black ink across the stage. Toralei’s spikes came out accidentally and poked Frankie. Alarmed, Frankie zapped everyone with electricity. The ghouls’ dancing was worse than ever.

Watching from the bleachers, Kala was delighted. “They’re terrible! I love it!”

Peri was concerned. “Maybe we should help them do better.”

“Why?” asked Pearl. “They’re flopping perfectly on their own.”

“Put a flipper in it,” Kala snapped. “I’m watching.”

Peri leaned close to her other head. “Pearl, this is mean. Kala is a bully. You’ve got to get your head out of the clouds and back in the water. She’s not our real friend.”

“Are you saying Kala is two-faced?” Pearl whispered back. “Trust me, I would know!”

Peri sighed. “If we can’t put our heads together, we’ll have to agree to disagree.”

“That’s the smartest idea to come out of your mouth all day!” Pearl turned away from her sister, her hand on their hip.

“Will you two clam up?” Kala asked angrily. She didn’t want anything to get in the way of her enjoyment. Lagoona and her ghoulfriends were terrible. This dance performance would be the worst ever.
